ISN Green-K Webinar: Importance of prevention and delaying kidney failure in Green Nephrology

  • 3 PM CET

This webinar is aimed at bringing to the fore the importance of preventive nephrology. Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is presently the 9th commonest cause of death globally and has been projected will become the 5th commonest cause of death globally by 2040. Thus the time to change this ugly trend is now. Green nephrology approach to preventive nephrology will highlight all the easy to prevent kidney disease without causing problems for our environment and beautiful world. In developing world where out of pocket payment for health care is the norm makes management of kidney disease mission impossible. Hence the role of preventive nephrology cannot be overemphasizedFurthermore, when kidney disease has occurred and has progressed to end stage, kidney transplantation becomes the definitive treatment. Unfortunately, transplant services are not readily available and where available, the cost is prohibitive besides the difficult logistics such as getting an altruistic donor. Hence, prevention remains better than cure. Preventive nephrology is not limited to chronic kidney disease. It also includes preventing acute kidney injury which is a risk factor for development and or progression of CKD. In this webinar, we want to draw our attention to the fact that we can still protect our environment while equally protecting the kidneys.

Learning objectives:

  • Definition of preventive nephrology in the context of green nephrology
  • Discuss the environmental effects of kidney care on the environment
  • Explore the various kidney disease risk factors with special emphasis on the preventable risk factors
  • Discuss ways of developing institional green nephrology practices
